What is The Charlton School? § The Charlton School is a private, not-for-profit, residential treatment center and special education facility for troubled adolescent females. The students live at Charlton for about a year while they and their families work on a wide range of emotional, behavioral, family and academic problems. How old are the Students? § The age range of our students is 13 –18 years old. The average age of our students is 15. How are educational needs if the student met? § The Charlton School has an on-campus school with grades eight through eleven. Our on-campus school (Ketchum-Grande Memorial School) provides a standard New York State curriculum as well as a wide range of other academic programs and services. Some students, who are academically and socially ready, attend public school at the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School. Click on Eligibility for more details. Where do the students come from? § 80% of our students come from the Capital District - Saratoga, Schenectady, Albany and Rensselaer Counties. The remaining 20% are from a variety of upstate communities. How do the students get in to The Charlton School? § The students are referred to The Charlton School from various New York State County Departments of Social Services and public school districts. How is The Charlton School funded? § The Charlton School has contracts with a number of County Departments of Social Services and with New York State Office of Children and Family Services. Charlton is paid by the referring County Departments of Social Services through a per diem rate set by the New York State. Charlton is also supported by gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations as well as from interest and dividends earned from our private endowment. What is the Charlton’s success rate? § Based on our formal and informal data, including information received in our Aftercare Program, about 80% of our students return to their families, communities and schools in a successful manner. Less than 5% of the students experience replacement at an equal or higher level of care. What is the governing body?
