Health CareCharlton School employs a full-time Health Care Coordinator who is a Registered Nurse. A consulting Psychiatrist and a consulting Psychologist are available on specific days each week. Parents or guardians sign a form at the time of admission permitting The Charlton School to secure medical attention for their child. Shortly after admission, each student receives a health evaluation. This evaluation includes a complete health history, immunization assessment, and an appraisal of dental or eye care needs. Generally, local health care providers who are associated with Charlton School treat students. However, families may choose to continue their child’s care through other health care providers. Such arrangements must be made through the Health Care Coordinator. Cottage staff is trained in the administration of medicines, first aid and CPR, and are equipped to handle routine medical needs. Students requiring emergency care are seen in one of the local hospital emergency rooms. Should this situation arise, parents or guardians are immediately notified. Students who are seen by the Health Care Coordinator and are found to be ill, may be placed on ”sick policy” so that they may recover as quickly as possible. Students on sick policy remain in the infirmary or in their room, and are checked frequently by staff. When on sick policy, students are allowed to use the cottage office telephone only during regular program times and have a bedtime of 9:00 PM.
