In January a new client support group will begin on the campus of The Charlton School.  The focus of this group will depend largely on the needs of the participants but it is designed to help and support our students and their families as they pursue their goals.  In the first group meeting in January the group will discuss future meeting times, length of the group and identify discussions/topics that members find useful in both working with students while in placement, as well as ongoing preparation for their return to their homes, school and community.

In the past Family support groups and Multi-Family Therapy groups have proven very helpful to our families, who often feel alone in their attempts to grow as a family and to prepare for the return of their daughters.  Besides emotional support, our Family Groups also provides useful information and practical guidance through shared experiences.  It is also a way to optimize the efficient use of Charlton’s resources in helping families.

Update: Our first group was held on 01/16/12.  Six parents attended and there was great participation.  The next group is scheduled for 02/27/12 at 6:00 PM.

The Charlton School has received formal approval from the State Education Department to construct three new classrooms as an addition to our campus school building.

The architectural and engineering designs for this expansion have been completed and Charlton is in the process of selecting a contractor in order to begin construction.  The date for beginning construction has not been decided on as we work out last minute details but our students hope to begin using the new classrooms by the beginning of next school year.

The expansion is designed to help Ketchum-Grande School, which is the educational arm of The Charlton School, to meet the educational needs of a more challenging population of students.  Besides teaching the academic core subjects as defined by New York State curriculum Ketchum-Grande hopes to provide the students with a successful educational experience and the acquisition of marketable skills in computers, art technology and video editing.  With new space and equipment the students will have the opportunity to develop new, interesting skills which they can translate into productive employment.

Besides learning academic and technical skills the goal of Ketchum-Grande is to motivate the students to fulfill their potential as learners.  Nothing succeeds like success as they say.  It is our hope to convince students, by facilitating and supporting their successful efforts in school that they are capable learners, and that learning is exciting and that college and trade schools are not beyond their potential and their ability.  Charlton understands that goals are essential for success and that education is the key to a future full of potential, opportunity and productive involvement.
