residential school for girls NYCampus Life

During the school year, between 2 PM and 9PM, students are offered a variety of educational and recreational programs. Choices include Expressive Arts, computers, physical activities, board games, and community service projects.

The campus has a variety of recreational equipment including an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, mountain bikes, in-line skates, a work-out room, camping facilities, a fishing pond and an Expressive Arts Program.

The programming at Charlton is designed to offer structured activities that provide physical movement and creative challenges in a healthy, drug-free, setting.

Expressive Arts

The Expressive Arts Program at Charlton is visual arts based.  As directed by Jesse Epstein, MFA, our students are offered an intensive individualized experience in the Fine Arts.  The students are guided through the stages of the creative process:  inspiration/idea development, materials selection and engineering, technical processes, evaluation, editing and critique.  Our program is unique in that the focus is on the individual, exploring and giving voice to their experience, while challenging them with university level processes.

Expressive Arts works in conjunction with our Treatment Groups.  The flexibility of the arts as offered through the expertise of our instructor lends itself towards personal growth and development while providing a window through which alternative insight into our students can be viewed.  Topics and issues that are too hard to confront directly can be expressed through a piece of art.  As our students work on their pieces, they are really working on themselves.  The studio acts as a training ground for real life.  Commitment, dedication, responsibility, risk taking, handling failure and success are just a few examples of what is experienced.

Additionally, students have the opportunity to learn and achieve in an environment outside of the school setting.  Math, science, technology and invention are the foundations of art making.  Wide ranging conversations and open ended research process expose young minds to possibilities never before encountered.  Future careers not limited to just the arts, such as electricians, architects, scientists, engineers, etc. become attainable.  In the studio, our students work ranges from projects as assessible as pinch pots to ones involving mold making, life casting, soldering and moveable parts.

Recreation

Active participation in recreation is seen as an important part of a girl's self esteem and growth process. Opportunities for creative physical activities, both on and off campus, are provided. There is also regular free time during which the girls pursue their own interests and activities.

Community Service

The students are encouraged and helped to participate in a variety of community service activities such as volunteering at the local nursing home. The act of giving helps the students experience an enhanced service of self-respect and esteem.

Additonally, Charlton provide opportunities for mature and responsible individuals to work or volunteer with our students either as tutors, visitation resources or off campus activities.

Therapeutic Animal Care Program

Charlton’s Animal Care Program is made up of a variety of domesticated animals (a horse, sheep, chickens, alpacas, etc) and is an important part of The Charlton School’s overall treatment program. The program is designed to give the students the opportunity to be positively involved in the care and nurturing of animals.residential school and therapy program NY

This goal is consistent with one of Charlton’s primary objectives of helping students to experience the relationship between privilege and responsibility as well as the personal rewards of success. It is also meant to put students in the role of care giver which offers them the positive esteem necessary to facilitate their own growth and healing.

In addition to our Animal Care Program, Charlton also has a Therapeutic Riding Program. In this program Students experience the opportunity to be involved with horses on many levels including quality care, relationship, commitment and, most enjoyably riding. For many of the Students this experience has opened new world of learning, responsibility and enjoyment.

Off Campus Activities

Involvement by the girls in a variety of family and community activities is encouraged and facilitated by Charlton staff. Regular home visits are encouraged on weekends, holidays, and during school vacations. These visits are a key part of our treatment and are tied closely to the Family Therapy Program.
